Construction calculator
Gravel Calculator
Estimate gravel volume and weight for driveways, pads, paths and landscaping using your dimensions and material density.
Enter the area, depth and material density.
Gravel calculator example
Example: 30 ft × 12 ft area, 4 in deep, bulk density 100 lb/ft³ and 10% allowance.
Volume = 30 × 12 × (4 ÷ 12) = 120 ft³ = 4.44 yd³
Weight = 120 × 100 = 12,000 lb = 6.00 short tons
With 10% allowance = 6.60 short tons
Weight = 120 × 100 = 12,000 lb = 6.00 short tons
With 10% allowance = 6.60 short tons
Why gravel weight varies
Two gravels occupying the same volume can have different weights because particle size, rock type, void space and moisture content differ. MetricFigure therefore lets you enter the density instead of pretending one fixed conversion works for every aggregate.
Volume versus delivered tonnage
Suppliers may quote gravel by volume or by weight. This calculator shows both so you can compare your project dimensions with the supplier's sales unit.
