Fence Calculator

Estimate posts, fence sections, rails, panels and pickets or boards from the length of a fence run.

Enter fence length and post spacing.

Fence calculator example

Example: 100 ft of fence excluding gates, 8 ft target post spacing, two rails per section and no extra posts.

Sections = ceiling(100 ÷ 8) = 13
Base posts = 13 + 1 = 14
Average resulting spacing = 100 ÷ 13 = 7.69 ft
Rails = 13 × 2 = 26

Why the actual spacing can be smaller than the target

The calculator rounds the section count up so the resulting average spacing does not exceed your target spacing. That is why a 100 ft run with an 8 ft target produces thirteen sections at about 7.69 ft each.

Panels and pickets

Panel width and picket dimensions are optional. If entered, MetricFigure estimates whole panels or pickets and applies the overage percentage before rounding.
